5 - Duty Calls

COMMENTARY: This might be considered "cheating", but one thing I like about this commentary feature is that it allows me to explain things outside of the strip, so that clumsy expository dialogue (like Deena's thoughts in the last panel of today's strip?) can be kept to a minimum. In this case, it lets me tell you that the man in the dark suit who interrupts Scott's and Deena's "tender moment" in panel 2 is Tom Thorndyke, the reporter to whom Scott is assigned. As alluded to in day 3, Tom does a regular feature for WNVT-TV News called "No Secrets", a tabloid-y muck-raking "exposé" series (think "Inside Edition" back when Bill O'Reilly was its host) that constitutes a "guilty pleasure" for most of its audience, even though Thorndyke genuinely believes he's engaging in serious journalism, and dreams of the day the networks will finally discover his "talents" and give him the national news anchor chair he thinks he so richly deserves.
